What the UG65 Does

An 8-channel LoRaWAN gateway providing the radio infrastructure for sensor networks across buildings, campuses, and urban areas.

The UG65 receives LoRaWAN transmissions from end devices across 8 simultaneous channels in the EU868 band. It forwards decoded packets over Ethernet or cellular to a LoRaWAN Network Server, which handles device authentication, data routing, and downlink scheduling. The UG65 is a radio bridge between the sensor network and the network server – it does not process application data itself.

Connectivity options are Ethernet (primary) with an optional 4G cellular module for sites where wired backhaul is unavailable or as a failover path. The gateway supports public network servers (TTN, Chirpstack, AWS IoT) and Milesight’s own DeviceHub platform via standard LoRaWAN Packet Forwarder and Semtech UDP protocol.

The unit is wall or ceiling mountable with a compact form factor suited to comms rooms, plant rooms, and office environments. PoE 802.3af power means a single Ethernet cable handles both data and power, simplifying installation in spaces without local DC power rails.

Coverage note

Indoor range depends heavily on building construction. In open-plan offices and warehouses, a single UG65 can cover 5,000 to 10,000 square metres. In concrete-framed buildings with multiple floors, coverage per gateway is typically 1,000 to 3,000 square metres. Site surveys are recommended for critical deployments.

Getting Started with DeviceHub

Milesight DeviceHub manages UG65 gateways remotely – configuration, firmware updates, and health monitoring from a single cloud dashboard.

1

Create a DeviceHub account

Register at the Milesight DeviceHub portal. No on-premise server installation is required. A free tier is available for small deployments; paid plans remove device limits.

2

Connect the UG65 to DeviceHub

In the UG65 web UI, navigate to the Management section and enter your DeviceHub server address and credentials. The gateway establishes an outbound connection – no inbound firewall rules are required. It appears in DeviceHub within seconds of connecting.

3

Configure the LoRaWAN network server

The UG65 includes a built-in Chirpstack network server for self-contained deployments, or configure Packet Forwarder mode to send data to an external NS. Register end devices using their DevEUI, AppEUI, and AppKey for OTAA authentication.

4

Monitor and maintain remotely

DeviceHub shows gateway uptime, connected device count, packet statistics, and signal quality. Firmware updates push remotely from the console. Alerts notify on gateway disconnection or connectivity degradation.

Where the UG65 Is Deployed

Common indoor and campus LoRaWAN applications in UK deployments.

Building Energy Monitoring

A single UG65 covers a medium-sized office building, collecting data from LoRaWAN-connected electricity sub-meters, heat meters, and water meters. The long battery life of LoRaWAN sensors means meters in risers and plant rooms do not need mains power connections.

Environmental Sensing

Temperature, humidity, CO2, and occupancy sensors connect to the UG65 without Wi-Fi credentials or IT involvement. Data routes to the building management system or a cloud dashboard via MQTT.

Asset and People Tracking

LoRaWAN tags on equipment and personnel broadcast location and status data to the UG65. Multiple UG65 units improve indoor positioning accuracy through RSSI triangulation.

Smart Metering

Housing associations and facilities managers deploy the UG65 to backhaul data from LoRaWAN water and heat meters across residential blocks. PoE power simplifies installation in comms rooms where DC power rails are not present.
