What the UR35 Is Built For

Industrial remote monitoring, SCADA connectivity, and field-site networking where reliability and remote management matter more than throughput.

The UR35 sits between Milesight’s entry-level UR32 and the higher-specification UR75. It provides the dual SIM failover, industrial serial interfaces, and VPN capability that the majority of industrial IoT applications require, without the complexity or cost of higher-tier hardware.

The router supports active-standby dual SIM operation, switching automatically between SIM cards on connectivity loss. The RS232 and RS485 serial ports allow direct connection to meters, PLCs, sensors, and legacy equipment using Modbus RTU and ASCII protocols – making the UR35 a practical choice for modernising brownfield infrastructure without replacing existing field devices.

VPN support covers OpenVPN, IPsec IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP, and GRE, with up to five simultaneous VPN tunnels. The router runs a Linux-based OS and exposes a full web UI, CLI, and SNMP interface. DeviceHub cloud management is supported for organisations managing multiple deployed units.

Typical UR35 Deployments

Where the UR35 is most commonly specified in UK projects.

1

Water and Wastewater Remote Telemetry

Pumping stations, boreholes, and treatment works typically use RS485 to connect existing PLCs and flow meters. The UR35 bridges these serial devices to an IP network over 4G without requiring panel replacement, while VPN tunnels maintain a secure path back to the SCADA head-end.

2

Roadside and Transport Infrastructure

Traffic signal controllers, level crossing systems, and roadside equipment use the UR35 as a primary WAN device. The wide temperature range and DIN rail mounting suit cabinet installations, and dual SIM prevents single-operator outages from taking a site offline.

3

Energy and Grid Monitoring

Substations and distributed energy assets use the UR35 to provide secure, out-of-band management connectivity. SNMP and VPN support integrate with existing NMS platforms, and digital I/O allows basic alarm signalling without additional hardware.

4

Temporary and Construction Site Connectivity

The UR35 deploys quickly on 9-48V DC power with no local internet infrastructure required. Construction sites use it to provide temporary connectivity for CCTV, access control, and site management systems during the build phase.
