Low Earth Orbit satellite has moved from a last resort to a serious connectivity option. SAT365 wraps a LEO service in enterprise management, so it can act as fixed wireless access, a resilience layer, or backhaul for IoT at sites that terrestrial networks cannot reach. Here is how it works, where it fits, and how to get the connectivity design right.

For years, satellite connectivity carried a reputation for high latency, high cost and painful setup. Low Earth Orbit constellations have changed that picture. By flying satellites a few hundred kilometres up rather than in distant geostationary orbit, LEO cuts round-trip latency to figures that are usable for voice, video and interactive applications, while delivering bandwidth that rivals a decent fixed line.

SAT365 is Comms365‘s managed LEO satellite portfolio. The important word is managed. Buying a bare satellite terminal gives you a link and little else. SAT365 adds a service wrap, deployed and supported by Comms365’s UK based Network Operations Centre, that turns the raw satellite connection into a business grade WAN with fixed IP, routing, security and failover options around it. That is the difference between a consumer dish and a managed corporate service.

The short version: SAT365 is LEO satellite access plus a managed service layer, delivered with UK sovereign infrastructure and a 24/7 UK NOC. The overlay technology doing the heavy lifting is Comms365’s Continuum Constellation platform. It suits any site where fibre is absent, too slow to install, or needs a resilient partner.

Why LEO satellite, and how it compares

The case for LEO rests on three things: speed that is fit for real business use, latency low enough for interactive traffic, and a lead time measured in days rather than the weeks or months a new leased line can take. That last point is often the deciding factor. A site that needs connectivity now cannot wait for a fibre build.

Fibre still wins on raw latency and, where it exists, on cost per megabit. The point of LEO is not to beat fibre everywhere. It is to deliver a business usable link wherever fibre is impractical, and to do it fast. That makes it a strong fit for two jobs in particular: fixed wireless access, and connectivity for IoT.

The comparison people forget to run is against cellular. Before you reach for satellite, check whether 5G fixed wireless access covers the site, because where there is a usable mast in range it is almost always cheaper, lower latency and simpler to support. LEO earns its place at the sites where that answer comes back no, or where the mast itself is the single point of failure you are trying to design out. Comms365 are unusually honest about this in their own material, which notes that neither fixed line nor cellular is the right answer in 99% of scenarios and that blended designs generally win.

Not just a connection: the managed service wrap

The real value in SAT365 sits around the link rather than in it. On its own, a LEO terminal typically hands you a best effort public internet connection behind carrier grade NAT, with a changing IP address and no priority controls. That is fine for casual browsing and unworkable for most business or IoT deployments. The Continuum Constellation service wrap addresses this directly.

Why these features matter

A fixed public IP is the feature that unlocks most business and IoT use. It allows inbound access, site to site VPNs, IP whitelisting and remote device management, none of which work reliably behind shared satellite NAT. QoS lets you protect voice and video traffic when a site is busy. SD-WAN integration means the satellite link can sit alongside fibre or cellular in a single managed overlay, with traffic steered by policy. 4G and 5G failover adds a second path so a passing obstruction or outage does not take the site offline, and proactive monitoring from the UK NOC means problems are seen before the site reports them.

The failure mode your monitoring will not catch

There is one behaviour worth understanding before you deploy any LEO service. Consumer and small business satellite tariffs typically include an allowance of priority data. Once that allowance is consumed, the connection does not fail. It is throttled, in some cases to around 1Mbps down and 0.5Mbps up, until more data is purchased.

That distinction matters enormously. An outage triggers your alerting. A throttle does not. The link is still up, still passing ICMP, still green on the dashboard, and completely useless for CCTV, voice or telemetry. Your first indication is a phone call from the site. This is precisely why the managed wrap includes data usage monitoring with threshold alerting across all sites from a single view, and it is the argument that sells the service to anyone who has been caught by it once.

SAT365 as fixed wireless access (FWA)

Fixed wireless access means delivering a fixed site’s primary connectivity over the air rather than through a cable. Most people meet FWA in its 4G and 5G form, where a router at the premises connects to a nearby mast. That works well where mobile coverage is strong, and not at all where it is weak or absent. This is exactly the gap LEO satellite fills.

Because a LEO terminal only needs a clear view of the sky, SAT365 can act as fixed wireless access almost anywhere, including sites with no usable fibre, no cable and poor mobile signal. For a rural office, a new build with no infrastructure, a temporary premises or a remote facility, it becomes a viable primary connection rather than a stopgap.

The distinction that matters here is managed versus best effort. A raw satellite dish gives you connectivity. SAT365 gives you fixed wireless access you can put a business on, with an IP address that stays put, security you can design around, and a UK team watching the link.

SAT365 for IoT and M2M

IoT projects live and die on connectivity, and the hardest sites are almost always the remote ones. A pumping station, a substation, a reservoir, a remote weather or environmental sensor, a construction compound: these are the places that generate the most valuable data and have the least infrastructure. LEO satellite gives those sites a route back to the platform.

How LEO fits an IoT architecture

In most deployments the satellite terminal does not talk to sensors directly. It provides the backhaul. An edge gateway or industrial router aggregates the field devices over cellular, wired, LoRaWAN or serial links, and the satellite service carries that traffic to the core. With a fixed IP and a VPN on the SAT365 side, engineers can reach the gateway and its downstream devices securely, run remote management, and pull telemetry into a SCADA or IoT platform as if the site were on a fixed line.

Design tip: pair the satellite link with cellular for resilience. Many remote IoT sites run a router with an IoT SIM as the primary or failover path, with LEO satellite covering the case where there is no mast in range, or the mast itself has failed. SD-WAN steers between the two so the platform never sees the site drop.

If you take that route, make the cellular half a roaming SIM rather than a single-operator one. A site remote enough to justify satellite is a site where you cannot assume any one network has usable coverage, and an unsteered multi-network SIM will attach to whichever operator the device can actually see. Pairing satellite with a single-network SIM gives you two paths that can both be dark for the same reason.

The SIM management problem at remote sites

There is a wrinkle specific to the kind of site that needs satellite. If a location is remote enough that you are flying its data down from orbit, it is remote enough that you never want to send anyone there to change a SIM card.

This is where eUICC and eSIM come in, and where the specification matters more than the marketing. SGP.22, the consumer specification, assumes a person with a screen scanning a QR code. That assumption fails completely on an unmanned substation. SGP.32, the IoT specification, replaces it with an eSIM IoT Manager that pushes profile changes to unattended devices remotely, with a rollback mechanism if the new profile fails to attach.

Comms365 are one of the few UK providers to state that they support both SGP.22 and SGP.32, from QR code provisioning through to remotely pushed profiles. If your remote sites are going to outlive your current operator contract, and they usually do, that is worth asking about at design stage rather than discovering later.

SAT365 is rarely bought in isolation, and it is not designed to be. It sits at one end of a connectivity portfolio that Comms365 have built out since 2008, and the value usually appears where two or three of those services are combined rather than where one is deployed alone.

The design that comes up most often in practice is a three-layer one: fibre where it exists, cellular on an unsteered multi-network SIM as the second path, and LEO satellite as the layer that works when the first two are absent or both compromised by the same local event. SD-WAN steers between them and the platform never notices.

Is SAT365 the same as buying a consumer satellite dish?
No. SAT365 uses LEO satellite constellation technology for the link, but delivers it as a managed Comms365 service with a fixed IP option, security, SD-WAN integration, failover and 24/7 UK NOC support around it. A consumer terminal gives you a raw best effort connection with none of that.
What is the difference between SAT365 and Continuum Constellation?
They are related but not the same. SAT365 is the satellite portfolio: LEO access, managed service options, monitoring, UK NOC support, service assurance and flexible engagement models for partners. Continuum Constellation is the overlay platform that delivers the technical features, fixed public IP, QoS, bonding, failover and remote terminal management. Constellation was originally built to make existing Starlink deployments business-grade, and can still be retrofitted to one. SAT365 is the fuller proposition with the access and the service wrap sold together. If you already have satellite and it is not fit for business use, you probably want Constellation. If you are starting from nothing, you want SAT365.
Can it be a site’s primary connection, or only a backup?
Both. With speeds up to 400Mbps and committed information rate options, it can be a primary link for a site with no fibre. It also works well as a resilient secondary path, with automated 4G and 5G failover available alongside it.
Do I get a fixed IP address?
Yes, a fixed public IP is available through the managed overlay. This is what makes VPNs, inbound access, IP whitelisting and remote device management practical, so it is usually essential for business and IoT deployments. This is the single biggest gap in raw consumer satellite services, which typically place you behind carrier grade NAT with an address that can change without warning.
Is the latency low enough for VoIP and video?
LEO latency of 25 to 70ms is a different world from older geostationary satellite. It is suitable for voice, video calls and most interactive applications, with QoS available to protect that traffic when a site is busy.
Should I use LEO satellite or 5G FWA?
Check cellular first. Where there is a usable mast within range, 5G fixed wireless access is normally cheaper, lower latency and simpler to support than satellite. LEO earns its place where mobile coverage is absent or unreliable, where the site has no realistic fibre route, or where you need a second path that is genuinely diverse from the first. The strongest designs frequently use both: cellular as the everyday link and satellite as the layer that survives a local mast failure or a fibre cut that takes the whole area out.
How quickly can it be deployed?
Lead times can be as little as two days, compared with the one week to several months a new fixed line can take. That speed is often the reason sites choose LEO in the first place.
Where is my data handled?
SAT365 is delivered on UK sovereign data infrastructure with a UK based NOC, which matters for organisations with data residency and compliance requirements.

Wireless Logic acquired Comms365 in February 2026.
